The MIME type of the codec (e.g., video/VP8, audio/opus).

The codec MIME media type/subtype, such as "video/VP8", "video/H264", "video/VP9", "video/AV1", "audio/opus", or "audio/G722". Indicates which codec is being used for encoding or decoding.

  • Common video codecs in WebRTC: VP8 (widely supported), VP9 (better compression), H.264 (hardware acceleration), AV1 (newest, best compression). For audio, opus is the dominant choice with excellent quality at low bitrates, with G.711 used for interoperability with legacy systems.
